This September, Western New York Dermatology would like to remind our patients of the importance of having regular skin checks performed.
Why? According to skincancer.org, one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of their lifetime!
Having an annual skin check performed ensures that any problem spots will be caught early, maintaining your health and providing you peace of mind.
What Causes Skin Cancer?
The most common cause of skin cancer is damage and UV radiation from the sun, but genetic factors can also increase your chances of getting skin cancer. UV light from tanning beds is another incredibly common way for skin cancer to start.
How Can Skin Cancer Be Prevented?
- Avoid tanning beds and tanning outdoors
- Use SPF 30 (or greater) sunscreen when outdoors, reapplying every two hours
- Wear sun-protective clothing and a hat that covers your face and ears
- Wear sunglasses
- Have an annual skin checked performed
